WDP Staff Invited to attend LDDI Conference
Austin Harris, Staff Engineer I of WDP’s Blacksburg office, has been invited to attend “The Land Development Design Initiative” conference in Richmond, Virginia, on July 12, 2019. He and his senior design group from Virginia Tech were one of the two teams invited to this conference to present their design project. Austin was part of a 4-person senior design team that took an undeveloped 6-acre parcel and made it ready for construction through conceptual design, grading, stormwater, sewer, water, erosion & sediment control, and cost estimation. They had to produce between 25 to 30 townhome-sized lots and make them fully ready for construction. His team was paired with Bowman Engineering as their mentoring company, and they selected the project located in Stafford, Virginia. The semester-long project required researching the many local, state, and federal codes to determine which had precedent. Of the 7 teams in the program, the top 2 were invited to present at the conference.
The conference is a collaborative effort of the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech with industry practitioners. The conference aims to improve land development design education, increase interaction between practitioners and undergraduate civil engineering students at Virginia Tech, and enhance research efforts in the land development area. Typically, 70 to 100 professionals from the land development industry attend including consulting engineers, developers, home builders, municipal engineers, and others.
