The college campus was experiencing many roof leakages throughout New York City, with water intrusion into classroom and laboratory spaces below.
WDP navigated through dozens of discreet roof areas, many original to the buildings, to perform a detailed condition survey of existing roof systems, masonry parapets, flashings, roof penetrations, perimeter conditions, and related enclosure components. The investigation focused on correlation of existing leaks with observed roofing defects and determining whether adjacent masonry and fenestration conditions were a contributing factor to water infiltration.
Because the replacement roofing needed to meet design requirements and resist hurricane-force winds, our design approach primarily focused on durability. Additionally, we identified roof areas for replacement, recommended test cut locations and reviewed the proposed roof slopes to prevent drainage and elevation conflicts. Our recommendations helped the renovation of the building to address the current leakage, reduced the risk of future infiltration and minimized disruption to building operations.
