UVA Children's Hospital Battle Building, Charlottesville, VA

The Barry and Bill Battle Building at University of Virginia (UVA) Children’s Hospital is a new healthcare facility on UVA’s campus in Charlottesville, Virginia.  The project is seven stories plus a basement totaling 200,000 SF.

WDP provided structural and building envelope peer review services for the project to assist the design team in the development of the Drawings and Specifications.  Starting with Development Drawings and working through the issuance of Contract Documents, WDP performed several review iterations as the level of detail related to the building envelope within the design documents progressed.  A structural peer review was also carried out.  Each review focused on identifying potential issues within the design based on applicable codes, standards, industry practices and our experience with similar conditions.  All in effort to better the design and minimize the amount of additional clarification required once Construction was underway.  We also performed advisory reviews of submittals and shop drawings related to the building envelope to ensure compliance with the performance requirements and to identify constructability issues and concerns.  During the mockup phase, we assisted the design team in developing various integration details, and later observed the proper installation of these conditions on the building.  During the construction phase, we performed periodic site observation to review installed conditions, document deficiencies and make recommendations to improve various conditions.

The Battle Building achieved a LEED Gold rating in 2015.
