Virginia Tech Innovation Campus

Innovation Campus Academic Building

In the Spring of 2021, WDP began operating as the Building Enclosure Commissioning Authority (BECxA) on the new landmark building for the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus located in Alexandria, VA. The 11-story academic building will serve students as a computer science and computer engineering research facility. This project helped pave the way for the finalization of the Amazon HQ2 site located nearby in Crystal City, VA.

WDP’s scope of work as the Building Enclosure Commissioning Authority includes the review of the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) and the Basis of Design (BOD), technical review of the contract drawings and specifications related to the enclosure at multiple iterations of the design, and development of the BECx Plan. In addition to the work related to the Design, WDP will assist during bidding and value engineering operations as well as observation throughout construction. During construction, WDP will review contractor submittals; attend and observe field performance testing, laboratory, and/or onsite mockup construction and testing; write construction checklists; perform construction observation including tracking issues and subsequent resolutions of construction deficiencies; and provide a review of the envelope performance after owner occupation.

The design of the building was optimized for solar performance for the numerous quantities of solar arrays located on the roof, as well as built into the curtain walls throughout the building. In addition to the unitized curtain walls, the building façade incorporates Virginia Tech’s own Hokie Stone, as well as metal panels in select locations. The roofs are a combination of green roof assemblies over an HRA membrane, torch-down modified bitumen systems, and single-ply membrane systems.
