Richard Freewalt, R.A., LEED AP, Associate, Senior Architect

WDP Office: Manassas

Rich joined WDP in July 2021, bringing 31 years of extensive on-site and collaborative experience as an Architect, Project Manager, and Team Lead with a focus on building envelope/enclosure consulting, commissioning, and quality assurance (QA). He also has varied building design, construction, and investigative experience on large government and private organization projects.

Rich comes to WDP most recently from Jacobs, where he worked since 2014 as a Construction Administration Manager and Building Enclosure Commissioning Specialist in their Arlington office. Prior to that, Rich was a Senior Project Manager with ECS in Chantilly, and with SmithGroup as Director of Construction Services in DC.

Rich’s unique background stems from his 28 years in the US Air Force (Active / Reserve) dealing with master planning, programming requirements, and development of program strategies combined with a variety of responsibilities working for Architecture, Engineering, and Testing Agency firms. Rich served 8 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a Civil Engineering Officer before he served as a reservist. He was a Unit Commander twice and recognized as the Outstanding Civil Engineer Manager of the Year while serving, before he retired from the Air Force in 2017.

“Since 7th Grade Industrial Arts when I first picked up a drafting pencil and used a T-square to draw a line, I wanted to be an Architect. It’s been a unique, non-linear, and often rewarding journey since, including a couple of trips to the ‘Sand Box’ (deployments while in the Air Force) and navigating different roles as Designer, Consultant, Testing Agent, Owner’s Rep, Team Leader, and PM. What’s constant are working with people, solving problems, and research, research, research (read, observe, reread). WDP is unique in allowing me to perform multiple roles on a variety of challenging projects and, by doing so, leverages my experience and knowledge for maximum benefit to our Clients.”
