Donald N. Dedmond Center Arena

WDP was hired by Radford University to perform a building facade investigation into the causes of leakage through the below grade roofing/waterproofing in the Dedmon Center Arena and develop repairs to address the issues of water penetration into the boiler room and MEP spaces and entrance foyers. Built up waterproofing and roofing materials were installed on the horizontal roofing surfaces below grade, as well as vertical waterproofing at the arena interface with the rising walls, at the below grade entrance and adjoining exterior stairwell.

Description

The investigation, which included select removal of overburden to expose areas of the roofing and water testing of the as constructed conditions, identified both original construction deficiencies and deterioration of the membrane systems that were contributing to the leakage. WDP developed contract documents for the removal of grade and the replacement of all the below grade roofing and waterproofing. To access some of the leakage conditions, and to correct significant drainage and settlement issues, the exterior stairwell was demolished and removed in its entirety and replaced. Additionally, a boiler stack chimneying the boiler room was slated for replacement. The stack and structural guy wire supports were evaluated and reconstructed as part of the project. WDP assisted Radford University with the solicitation and evaluation of construction bids for the project and performed construction observations during the repairs.

WDP served as an advisor in the renovations to address the building envelope and waterproofing issues. In addition, WDP assisted with building science evaluations, including hygrothermal analyses, to ensure that building conditions could be maintained in critical exhibit and storage areas of the facility. WDP also developed details and specifications for critical areas related to condensation resistance and waterproofing.
